Common Core Math
We are all aware of the rigor that common core brings. And I feel as though, math is often put on the back burner. Recently a new law has passed that requires students to "read by 3." This implementation means that a lot of focus will go into ELA standards and math will be left in the dark.
BUT !!
It doesn't have to be! I have some great resources to share with you.
Zearn.org is a great website which is free. You can sign up and add student accounts. Perhaps choose students who need the extra instruction and have them log on to complete work after your math lesson. You can also set up accounts for students and use it as a center. Or best of all, you can use it whole group! It has videos for each standard (lesson) and interactive problem solving, as well as number talks and sprints!
Khan Academy is very similar to Zearn. In which you can set up students account or use whole group. However Khan is more centered on skill rather than standard (ex. Addition with carrying v.s 2.O.A.3)
Engage New York has an entire curriculum set up for math. Broken down into Modules for each standard. Each Lesson is complete with Number Talks, Sprints, Concept Development, Problem Set, Debrief, Exit Ticket, and Homework. A really great resource if you are wondering how to teach a standard or where to get rigorous problem sets for students.

Teresa,
ReplyDeleteYour blog is helpful by providing resources for both students and parents. I especially appreciate the idea of students and parents having the ability to access these resources on a computer or mobile phone. One of the best resources is Khan Academy and I enjoy watching their videos. Nice blog!
Hi Teresa,
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great blog. Anecdotally, common core math is one of the most criticized topics in education, your blog's resources provide some great information to dispel the myths surrounding common core math. While it is a new way of thinking and teaching, I think it really is a great method and will help students think more critically.
Hi Teresa,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing some great resources and for briefly explaining them. I think this is a great blog that can be shared with both parents to keep them included in the programs used in the classroom and also for new teachers new to the district. Not all states are strict on using Common Core, so it would be a sigh of relief to common across your resources. You hyperlinked the name of each one so it is just easy to click and be redirected.
Thank you for sharing
Annie
Teresa,
ReplyDeleteWow, those are some terrific resources!! I have used Khan Academy before, with my elementary students and with my own child that is in high school. I love the availability to all skill levels that it provides. I haven't used the other two, but will gladly utilize them and pass them on to my team members! Thank you!
